Welcome To Oscoda County

“OSCODA COUNTY – THE PEBBLY PRARIE”

When people say “We’re going North”, they often mean to Oscoda County and the Village of Mio. Long known as a destination for down-staters seeking scenic peace in the out-of-doors, Oscoda County is a major recreational center for Michigan hunters and fishermen alike.

Centered on the intersection of M-72 which runs 133 miles across Michigan’s north land from Empire to Harrisville and M-33 running north and south from Alger to Onaway, Oscoda County has something for everyone. Left over from the retreat of the last glacial period, Oscoda County is typical of the outwash plains so common in this part of Michigan.

The sandy soil provides the habitat required by the rare Kirtland Warbler for its nesting in the Jack Pine forests.

The AuSable Valley offers primer-fishing opportunities for everything from trophy Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout in the free run AuSable River and its tributaries to walleye, bass and Northern Pike in the inland lakes and behind the hydroelectric dams that harness the rivers energy.

Centered around the Mio area are Amish and Mennonite communities who offer their fine wood crafts and food stuffs to visitors through numerous country stores. Fairview is home to Steiners Museum of Pioneer Artifacts and Michigan AuSable one quarter scale steam railway where visitors may enjoy an old fashioned train trip through the AuSable State Forest.

The County offers extensive snowmobile trails for winter recreation, boundless hunting opportunities and the Shore to Shore Horseback Riding Trail.

Oscoda County gets its name from the Ojibway Indians who called it the “Pebbly Plain” because of the soil left after the last glaciers.

The town of Mio also has the distinction of the reaching the highest recorded summer temperature of anywhere in Michigan. On July 13th, 1936, the thermometer reached 112 degrees Fahrenheit.
