General Information

Iosco County covers an area of approximately 566 square miles and is located on the northeast corner of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

The county is bordered by Alcona county to the North, Ogemaw county to the west, and Arenac county to the south.

The population concentration is at its densest in 3 towns - Tawas City, East Tawas and Oscoda which is located close to the northern border. Large portions of the county is forested and falls under management of the Huron Manistee National Forest Service.

This area is also known as the "Sunrise Side" and attracts tourists from around the country during both summer and winter.

During the summer, tourist recreational activities center around boating, fishing, hiking, golf and numerous arts and crafts shows and festivals held throughout the season. Visitors also make use of numerous day parks and ample camping facilities that are scattered across the county.

Winter activities include hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and the annual Perchville USA festival, typically held during the first week of February.

Major routes leading into Iosco County include US-23 from the south connecting to I-75 and M-55 from the west out of West Branch, Houghton Lake and Cadillac areas.
