The Red Hawk Golf Club

Built in 2000 and designed by Arthur Hills, Red Hawk Golf Club is truly one of the gems of Northeast Michigan. This gorgeous 18-hole golf course offers everything you would expect from a club rated 40th best public course in the U.S in 2007 by Golf Digest.

Cut out of 205 acres of Pine, Oak, Maple and Birch forest, the Red Hawk is not only aesthetically breathtaking, but also provides a worthy challenge to golfers of any skill level. Multiple tee boxes on almost every hole ensures that club selection, especially on the par-3s is imperative. Fairways on the par-4s and par-5s slope in every which way and finding a flat lie, even in the middle of the short stuff, is often a fortunate turn of events. Once on the green, the player faces continuing challenges through valleys and over sweeping and sloping hills.

The 6th - a 160-yd par 3 sports a narrow green, 41 yards deep and with numerous tee boxes and flag placement options, this hole can play anything from a 3-iron to a solid 7.

Visually, the most intimidating is the 3rd - a 194yd par 3. It features a 63 foot drop from tee to green and getting the ball on the green is only half the battle. Feel free to breathe a sigh of relief as you get to the bottom of the hill for the narrow, paved cart path that snakes down there has bruised its fair share of egos and elbows alike.

The best golf hole by far is the 2nd - a 296yd par 4 that forces you to contemplate the old risk versus reward factors of the game. If you’re long enough off the tee, you can drive the green given a slight draw but if you end up in the greenside bunker, getting up and down in 2 can be a fun excursion.

The course as a whole plays sneaky long for one that measures 6,168 yards. This is in part due to lack of elevation but more importantly, the prevalent humidity and moistness of fairways. Thus, carry combined with placement off the tee on the par 4s and 5s is imperative.

It’s always a good idea to hit the driving range before a round and in the Red Hawk’s case, it is highly recommended. It does give you a good feel of the general conditions because the maintenance staff keeps all the practice facilities in good shape. The club also has a chipping green located adjacent to the range as well as a very good putting green that will give you a feel for the greens.

If you arrive hungry the Red Hawk Grill has a wide variety of appetizers and entrees to choose from as well as a full service bar ready to quench your thirst before or after the round. A beverage cart traverses the course in case you need a cold one while out in the summer heat.
